Tips for Obedience Dog Training

While it is definitely not uncommon for you to see dogs demonstrating bad behavior you should remember that such behavior is a direct result of the carelessness exhibited by the owner of the dog and the one to be blamed.

Avoiding bad behavior can be achieved by proper obedience dog training. But, can such training be done at home. Though it can be done at home, experts feel that it is the job of a professional to handle training. But, even if you are hiring a trainer you do have a role in the training to make it better.

Take assistance from contacts or your vet in locating a good dog training school. Get them to provide training not only to the dog but also to give you lessons. You can even request training to be conducted in your home as learning under familiar surroundings is much better.

If you are undertaking training yourself, you need to look into several aspects before embarking into starting off.

Fun

Contrary to the term, obedience training does not mean stringent rules. You dog will not understand that it needs to be trained to obey you. So, bring in the fun factor to training and make it an enjoyable experience for both of you.

One of the important aspects to training is positive reinforcement. This is done with rewarding the dog when demonstrating good behavior. While some trainers advise giving treats for good behavior others do not.

Consistency

Consistency is a key to obedience training. A simple example is where a dog is allowed on a rug on one day and shouted at for doing it another day. This does not allow the dog to learn right from wrong and will confuse it. So, stick by your rules once you form them as confusion will worsen things.

Selecting a Trainer

See how the trainer is handling his work by observing a training session. Also, the attitude demonstrated must be checked to see if he is suitable to teach the right attitude to the dog.

References

It is best to select a trainer on the basis of references rather than experimenting with new and unheard of ones. Ask your vet or some reliable people who will help you out in this matter.

Charges

Check with the school about the charges and the services offered for the fee paid. But, remember going for the cheapest option is not always the best option. Ensure that the trainer will be providing training lessons to both the dog and yourself in the charges mentioned.

Dog Training Methods

Clarify with the trainer as to what methods are used for training the dog. Check if this is the right approach to the training and if they are the best in the training field. There is no need to be hasty in making decisions. If something is not up to your expectations, look for others.

Putting your time and money in obedience dog training for your dog will go a long way in developing a good and healthy rapport with your dog. Not only will the dog be an obedient companion, it will make the lives of your family and itself a more happier one.
